How the Squarespace AI website builder works
You start by describing what the site is for, who it serves, what visitors should be able to do and how you want it to feel. Squarespace then generates a multi-page starting point with pages, copy, imagery, colors and fonts already in place, and you edit it in the normal Squarespace editor rather than through more prompts. Squarespace's guide to the step-by-step Blueprint AI builder (last updated September 2025) breaks the setup into steps: name the site, pick a brand personality, choose homepage sections, add pages such as About, Contact, a store or services, choose a color palette and a font pairing, then get pre-filled copy and images that you can regenerate. There are three ways in, according to Squarespace's help center: the step-by-step Blueprint AI Builder, Blueprint AI Templates (you pick a topic and get three AI-generated templates at the top of the template results), or Squarespace GPT inside ChatGPT, which hands your answers to the Blueprint AI Builder and shows an example of the site. What the AI can do after the first draft
Once the site exists, the AI tools move into the editor. The AI writer drafts or rewrites text (Simplify, Shorten, Lengthen) in text blocks, blog posts, product and video descriptions, course excerpts, discounts, email campaign sections and proposals, and it uses a Brand Identity you set up (a business description plus a personality) to keep the tone consistent. Image Studio creates a single image or a "Story set" of four from one prompt, and can reshoot an existing photo against a studio backdrop. You can describe a custom section, such as a comparison, gallery or pricing display, and Squarespace builds it to match the page. On version 7.1 sites using Fluid Engine, the SEO report can flag missing page descriptions and image alt text and suggest them. A chat assistant called Clarkson can change text and images, update site styles, create products and discounts, draft email campaigns and summarize analytics, but Squarespace says it is rolling out in waves, so it may not be on your site yet. AI Visibility checks whether your business shows up in AI answers and is currently limited to English-language markets.
AI credits: what the plans actually include
Squarespace meters some AI features with credits. Trial sites get 10 trial credits for select AI tools. When you upgrade, the trial credits expire and you get 10 starter credits that are one-time only and never renew. The Basic plan includes only those 10 starter credits. Core adds 20 credits a month, Plus 40 and Advanced 120, and monthly credits do not roll over. You can buy credit packs (up to 400 credits at a time) that roll over and expire a year after purchase. Per Squarespace's help center, the tools that spend credits are AI Visibility (which runs prompts on ChatGPT and Gemini models) and Image Studio, while the Clarkson assistant and the text AI tools do not cost credits. So a Basic site can keep using the AI writer, but has only those 10 credits for Image Studio and AI Visibility unless you buy credit packs.
Which Squarespace plan fits an AI-built site
Basic ($25 a month, or $19 a month billed yearly, as of September 2026) covers a simple site with up to 2 contributors, but charges a 2% transaction fee on online store sales, 7% on digital content and memberships, and leaves out the advanced code block and code injection. Core ($39 a month, or $29 billed yearly) is the plan Squarespace recommends: 0% store transaction fees, unlimited contributors, CSS and JavaScript customization, advanced analytics and 20 AI credits a month. Plus ($65, or $49 yearly) and Advanced ($139, or $99 yearly) mainly lower card processing rates (2.7% and 2.5% + $0.30 versus 2.9% + $0.30) and digital content fees (1% and 0%), add more advanced commerce tools and raise the AI credit allowance. Every annual plan includes one year of free domain registration, and all plans include hosting and SSL. If you plan to sell anything or want the AI tools beyond text, Core is the realistic starting point; Basic suits a brochure site.
Can you take a Squarespace AI site with you?
Only partly. Squarespace's only export is a WordPress-format .xml file, and it only works from an active, published site (not a trial). It exports layout pages, one blog with its posts, text and image blocks, and gallery pages. It does not export store pages, portfolio pages, product, video or audio blocks, more than one blog, drafts, style settings or custom CSS. Squarespace does not publish how many credits one Image Studio image or one AI Visibility run costs (the run cost is shown inside the tool), or the price of credit packs. It does not say how many times you can regenerate a Blueprint AI site during the trial, and it does not say when Clarkson will reach every site. We have left these out of the comparison rather than guess.
