Both now build a first draft from a description: Squarespace with Blueprint AI, WordPress.com with its AI website builder. The real split is not AI quality but what you are buying. Squarespace is a closed, all-in-one platform: templates, AI tools, hosting, commerce, scheduling and email marketing come from one company, and there is no free plan. WordPress is open-source software you can run two ways: on WordPress.com, where Automattic handles hosting, security and updates for you, or self-hosted from WordPress.org on a web host you choose and maintain. When people say WordPress in this comparison, the AI builder and the plan prices refer to WordPress.com, while the ownership points apply to WordPress in general.

Squarespace vs WordPress: the short answer
Choose Squarespace if you want a good-looking site built for you by AI, with hosting, commerce and support handled by one company, and you are fine paying from $19 a month billed yearly (as of September 2026) with no free plan. Choose WordPress if you want to start free or cheaper, need plugins for something specific (memberships, directories, complex SEO setups), or care about being able to pick up your whole site and move it to another host later. For a simple brochure site, both will do the job.
How Squarespace builds a site with AI (Blueprint AI)
Squarespace's AI website builder, which Squarespace calls Blueprint AI, asks what the site is for, who it serves, what visitors should do and how it should feel, then produces a multi-page starting point with pages, copy, imagery, colors and fonts. Squarespace groups these tools under Design Intelligence and says they are grounded in 20 years of its design work; TIME named Blueprint AI one of its Best Inventions of 2025. After the first draft you edit in the drag-and-drop editor, generate images, describe a custom section (such as a pricing display or comparison) for the AI to build, or ask the AI assistant for changes. Squarespace says it has partnered with OpenAI, Anthropic and Google for its AI features.
How WordPress.com builds a site with AI
WordPress.com's AI website builder works through chat: you describe the site, it asks a few follow-up questions, then generates a complete WordPress site with layouts, images and content. WordPress.com says most sites are ready in under five minutes. You keep refining by chatting with the WordPress Agent in the editor or by editing blocks directly, and the result is a normal WordPress.com site that can take plugins. WordPress.com also lets outside AI agents such as Claude and ChatGPT read and manage a site through MCP on any paid plan, and Studio Code, an AI agent that builds WordPress sites from a prompt, is in beta. AI limits and credits
Squarespace meters some AI features with credits. Basic includes only 10 starter credits that never renew; Core adds 20 credits a month, Plus 40 and Advanced 120, and you can buy credit packs. Image Studio and AI Visibility (which checks whether your business shows up in AI answers) spend credits, while the text AI tools and the Clarkson assistant do not, according to Squarespace's help center. WordPress.com says the AI website builder is available on any paid plan, but its pricing page marks the Personal plan's guided builder with "usage limits apply" without saying what those limits are. On both platforms, AI gets you a first draft; you still write and check the final copy.
Hosting and maintenance
Squarespace includes fully managed cloud hosting, free SSL and no caps on bandwidth or storage on every plan. WordPress.com also includes hosting on every plan, including the free one, with a global CDN, SSL, DDoS and brute-force protection, malware detection and removal, and automated WordPress core updates. Real-time backups with one-click restores come only on Business and Commerce. Self-hosted WordPress from WordPress.org is different: the software is free, but you buy hosting, and WordPress.org recommends a server running PHP 8.3 or newer with MySQL 8.0 or MariaDB 10.11 or newer. You, or your host, then own updates, security and backups for WordPress, your theme and every plugin. That upkeep is the main hidden cost of WordPress, and the main thing Squarespace takes off your plate.
What each one costs (as of September 2026)
Squarespace has four plans. Basic is $25 a month or $19 a month billed yearly, Core $39 or $29, Plus $65 or $49, and Advanced $139 or $99. That makes the first year of Basic $228 billed yearly and Core $348. Annual plans include one year of free domain registration. WordPress.com has a free plan and four paid plans. Billed yearly, Personal is $4 a month ($48 for the first year), Premium $8, Business $25 and Commerce $45; monthly billing is $9, $18, $40 and $70. The yearly prices are first-year prices: WordPress.com's pricing page says Personal auto-renews at $5 a month, Premium at $9, Business at $28 and Commerce at $50. So a WordPress.com Business site costs $300 in year one and $336 a year after that, close to Squarespace Core. Squarespace's pricing page shows one annual price per plan and no separate renewal rate. WordPress.com also offers two- and three-year terms with lower monthly rates. Self-hosted WordPress has no license fee, but you pay a hosting company, plus any premium themes or plugins you choose.
Ownership and leaving later
This is the biggest practical difference. WordPress is licensed under the GPLv2 or later, which gives you the freedom to run, study, change and redistribute the software, and any WordPress host can run your site. On WordPress.com, the standard export (Tools, then Export) produces an XML file of posts, pages, comments, categories and tags with links to your media, but not your theme, customizations or plugins; WordPress.com says to use a migration plugin to move a whole site, and Business and Commerce sites can download a full backup. Squarespace's only export is a WordPress-format .xml file, and only from an active, published site. It includes layout pages, one blog, text and image blocks and gallery pages. It leaves out store pages, portfolio pages, product, video and audio blocks, more than one blog, drafts, style settings and custom CSS. If you might outgrow your platform, WordPress keeps more doors open; Squarespace's design and store stay on Squarespace. Selling online
Squarespace commerce is built in on every plan: unlimited products, physical, digital and service sales, subscriptions, gift cards, abandoned cart recovery and checkout on your own domain. Basic charges a 2% transaction fee on online store sales; Core, Plus and Advanced charge 0%. Card processing through Squarespace Payments is 2.9% + $0.30 on Basic and Core, 2.7% + $0.30 on Plus and 2.5% + $0.30 on Advanced. Discounts, shipping labels, carrier-calculated shipping and Google Shopping listings start on Core. WordPress stores run on WooCommerce. On WordPress.com, the Commerce plan includes WooCommerce with built-in store extensions (abandoned cart emails, upsells, bulk discounts, inventory tools) and selling in 60+ countries, and WordPress.com says both Business and Commerce have 0% transaction fees for WooCommerce payments. WooPayments card processing in the US is 2.9% + $0.30. WordPress's AI builder does not create the store for you: WordPress.com says to add WooCommerce after the site is live. Squarespace is quicker to set up for a small catalog; WooCommerce gives more room to customize a large or unusual store.
Design, editing and extending the site
Squarespace sites are edited with Fluid Engine, a drag-and-drop editor where you can resize and move content on desktop and mobile. Squarespace Extensions connect third-party tools for things like tax, drop shipping and marketing on all plans, but custom JavaScript, code injection and the advanced code block need Core or higher, and Basic allows 2 contributors. WordPress uses the block editor plus themes and patterns, and every paid WordPress.com plan can install plugins from a catalog of more than 60,000, or upload your own. Business and Commerce add SFTP, SSH, WP-CLI and GitHub deployments for developers. WordPress.com allows unlimited users on all paid plans. The trade-off is upkeep: plugins need updating and can conflict.
Switching from Squarespace to WordPress
WordPress.com has a Squarespace importer under Tools, then Import. You export the .xml file from Squarespace, upload it, and WordPress.com imports your posts and pages and tries to copy your images; Squarespace itself recommends importing into WordPress.com rather than self-hosted WordPress because WordPress.com copies the images to its own servers. Anything Squarespace does not export (store pages, product blocks, styles) has to be rebuilt by hand, and you keep the Squarespace site public until the images have transferred. How to choose
Pick Squarespace if: you want AI to produce a designed site and then never think about hosting or updates; you sell a modest number of products or services and want payments, invoicing and scheduling in one dashboard; and you are comfortable staying on Squarespace long term. Pick WordPress.com if: you want to start free or pay less in year one; you need a specific plugin; you publish a lot; or you want the option to move to another host. Pick self-hosted WordPress if: you or a developer will manage hosting, security and updates, and you want full control of the server. Whichever you choose, budget for the plan you will actually need, which for selling online is Squarespace Core or WordPress.com Business or Commerce, not the entry plan. What we don't know
WordPress.com's pricing page lists the built-in AI site assistant under Business and Commerce, while its AI features page says the AI assistant works on any paid plan; we could not confirm which applies to Personal and Premium. WordPress.com does not say what the usage limits on the Personal plan's guided builder are. We could not confirm the transaction fees, if any, on WordPress.com Personal and Premium store or payment features. Squarespace does not publish how many credits one Image Studio image costs or the price of credit packs, and says Clarkson is still rolling out.

For most small businesses and creatives who want AI to build the site and never want to manage it, Squarespace is the easier choice, with Core ($29 a month billed yearly as of September 2026) as the realistic plan if you sell anything or want monthly AI credits. WordPress wins on flexibility, entry price and ownership: WordPress.com's AI builder gets you a full site on any paid plan from $4 a month in the first year (renewing at $5), plugins are available from that plan up, and the open-source software means you can take the site to another host. If leaving later matters, choose WordPress. If simplicity matters most, choose Squarespace.
