The Best Personal Website Builders in 2026

By Ethan Halfhide · Updated November 2, 2026

Last verified 2026-11-02

The best personal website builder depends on how many pages you need and how much you want to pay. This page compares Wix, Squarespace, Carrd and Framer on their free options, the cheapest paid plan, custom domains and AI help, using each maker's own pages fetched on 2 November 2026.

TL;DR: Top pick

Wix: Wix suits a personal site if you want to start free and let AI draft the first version. Its AI website builder takes a description of what you want and, per Wix, generates the site structure, pages, layout and copy, which you then edit by hand or with Aria, Wix's built-in AI agent. Real limits: the free plan carries Wix ads and a wixsite.com address, so a custom domain needs a paid plan. As of November 2026, Wix's blog lists Light at $17 a month, Core at $29, Business at $39 and Business Elite at $159, all on yearly plans paid in full, and Light is the cheapest paid plan. The included free domain is a one-year voucher for a new domain bought from Wix. Core is the first plan listed with payments. Our Wix AI website builder review goes deeper.

How to choose a personal website builder

The best personal website builder depends on how many pages you need. Wix is the easiest free start with an AI first draft, Squarespace is the design-led paid option, Carrd is the cheapest route to a one-page site, and Framer suits a design-heavy portfolio. Each option below lists its free limits, its cheapest paid plan and what it does not say, as of November 2026. If you want a wider list, see our best AI website builders ranking.

What to check before you pick

Start with the shape of the site. A single page with your intro and links needs very little, and a one-page tool such as Carrd is enough. A portfolio with several project pages needs a multi-page builder such as Wix, Squarespace or Framer. Then check three costs that builders list differently: the price to connect your own domain, the billing period you must commit to (Wix lists yearly plans paid in full, Carrd prices per year), and whether AI use draws on a credit balance. For a wider price view, see the cheapest website builder comparison, and for creative work the AI portfolio website builder page.

What we could not confirm

Wix's plans page showed location-dependent figures with a GST note (for example $17.77 for Light) and says prices and currency vary by location, so we use the blog's whole-dollar prices, which appear to be US dollars but are not labelled with a currency code. Squarespace's pricing page shows a pay-annually and a pay-monthly price per plan, and we label them that way. Framer says its prices are monthly and billed per the cycle chosen at checkout, without saying whether $10 and $30 are the yearly rates, so we say so rather than guess. Carrd's home page and the intro of its Pro page both say Pro starts from $19 a year, while the plan table on the Pro page lists a $9 Pro Lite tier without custom domains, so we list the tiers from the plan table. We did not find AI features on the Carrd pages we read.

How this page was put together

This page compares published information: the makers' own pricing and feature pages, fetched on 2 November 2026. We did not build sites with these tools, and nothing here is a test result. The order of the list reflects how well each option fits the page's stated criteria on paper, not a measured outcome. Where two of a maker's own pages disagree, or a page does not state something, we say so instead of guessing. Prices are as of November 2026 and can change.

    Wix

AI website builder with a free plan, drag-and-drop editing and 2000+ templates

Wix suits a personal site if you want to start free and let AI draft the first version. Squarespace

Template-led website builder with Blueprint AI, built-in commerce and a 14-day free trial

Squarespace has no free plan, only a 14-day free trial that needs no credit card. Its pricing page has a pay-annually and a pay-monthly price for each plan (Basic is $19 a month paid annually and $25 a month paid monthly), and annual plans include one year of free domain registration on available domains. Every plan includes form blocks and newsletter blocks, which covers a contact form on a personal site. Basic includes 10 one-time AI credits and takes a 2% fee on online store sales; Core adds 20 AI credits a month. Pick it if polished templates matter more to you than the lowest price. Our Squarespace pricing guide breaks the plans down.

    Best for:
    Design-led personal sites and portfolios

No free plan; 14-day trial; Basic $19/mo paid annually, $25/mo monthly (as of Nov 2026)

    Carrd

Carrd builds one-page sites, which is all many people need for a personal page, a link hub or a resume. Carrd says you can build up to three sites per account for free. Pro plans are priced per year: Pro Lite $9 (3 sites), Pro Standard $19 (10 sites) and Pro Plus $49 (25 sites), as of November 2026. All Pro plans remove Carrd branding, but custom domains, forms, widgets, embeds and analytics start on Pro Standard, and password protection and site downloads are on Pro Plus. Carrd offers a 7-day Pro trial with no card. Real limits: the pages we read describe one-page sites only and do not mention AI features, so you write the page yourself.

    Best for:
A cheap one-page personal site or link hub
    Pricing:
Free (up to 3 sites); Pro Standard $19/yr (as of Nov 2026)
  4. 4
    Framer

AI website builder and design agent for designers and teams, with CMS and hosting built in

Framer describes itself as a website builder with a design agent: you describe what you want and the agent builds layouts and sections on a canvas you can keep editing. Framer's pricing page lists a Free plan with no custom domain and 500 AI credits to try, Basic at $10 a month (30 pages, free custom domain on yearly billing) and Pro at $30 a month (150 pages), as of November 2026. Framer says all prices are monthly and billed according to the billing cycle selected at checkout, and it does not say whether $10 and $30 are the yearly-billing rates, so confirm at checkout. Pick Framer if you want a design-heavy portfolio and are comfortable with a canvas editor. Our Framer AI website builder review covers its AI features.

    Best for:
Design-heavy portfolios built on a canvas
    Pricing:
Free; Basic $10/mo, Pro $30/mo as listed, billing cycle set at checkout (as of Nov 2026)

Buying guide

A short way to choose: one page and a tight budget, pick Carrd; several pages and a free start, pick Wix; a polished portfolio and willingness to pay, pick Squarespace or Framer. Whichever you choose, confirm the price at checkout, because Wix says prices vary by location and Framer bills by the cycle you choose at checkout.

Verdict

Wix is the best starting point for most people because you can build for free, get an AI first draft and move to a paid plan only when you need a custom domain. Choose Squarespace if template quality matters more than cost, Carrd if one page is enough and price matters most, and Framer if you want a design-heavy portfolio. This ranking comes from published pricing and feature pages, not from testing, and it can change when the makers change their plans.

Frequently asked questions

It depends on what the site is for. Wix is the easiest place to start for free and get an AI first draft. Squarespace is the pick when template polish matters most, though it has no free plan. Carrd is the cheapest way to publish a single page, and Framer fits a design-heavy portfolio. This page ranks them on published information only, not on tests.

Yes, with limits. As of November 2026, Wix has a free plan with Wix ads and a wixsite.com address, Carrd lets you build up to three one-page sites for free, and Framer has a Free plan without a custom domain. Squarespace has no free plan, only a 14-day trial.

You do not need one to publish, but a free plan gives you the builder's own address, such as wixsite.com on Wix. A custom domain such as yourname.com needs a paid plan on Wix (from Light), on Carrd (from Pro Standard) and on Framer (Basic or Pro). Squarespace includes one year of free domain registration on available domains with annual plans.

For a single page, such as an intro, links and a contact form, Carrd covers it at a low price. Carrd describes itself as a builder for one-page sites, so a multi-page portfolio is a better fit for Wix, Squarespace or Framer. Forms start on the $19 a year Pro Standard plan, not on the $9 Pro Lite plan.

Wix generates a site from a description and lets you edit it by hand or with its Aria agent. Framer has a design agent that builds layouts on the canvas. Squarespace includes AI credits on its plans. The Carrd pages we read do not mention AI features.

As of November 2026, Carrd Pro Lite is $9 a year and Pro Standard $19 a year. Wix Light is $17 a month on a yearly plan paid in full, Framer Basic is listed at $10 a month (billing cycle chosen at checkout), and Squarespace Basic is $19 a month on annual billing or $25 paid monthly. Check each checkout page, because Wix says prices vary by location and Framer says its monthly figures depend on the billing cycle you pick.
